Brenda Williams Walker

Brenda Williams Walker (Doc) left this earth and entered Heaven on January 6th, 2023. Born in Delhi, La. on February 1st, 1948, she is survived by her beloved daughter Savannah Walker Kill and her husband Sam Kill, Brenda’s grandsons Harrison and Bridger Kill, mother Connie Finklestein and her longtime partner Luke Orihuela, sister Belinda Joanne (Joa) King and her husband Charles King, nieces Jami DeBernard and Mittie Roger, and numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Joseph L. Williams, nephew R. Lucas Chaisson, and maternal and paternal grandmothers.

Brenda’s love of music began in third grade with the clarinet. Next came the piano, the guitar, and then just about any instrument she could lay her hands on. By the 8th grade she was playing piano in church and never stopped. She graduated from Broadmoor High School in 1965 and continued to study music in her BA, Masters, and PhD at LSU. Brenda delighted in being an LSU Golden Girl and a member of Delta Zeta sorority.

Brenda was a teacher extraordinaire, an incredibly gifted choir director, and wonderfully expressive pianist, singer and vocal coach. She loved sharing her knowledge and love for music and shining a light on the strengths of her students. Her teaching career lasted for over 43 years, but her impact will last far beyond her lifetime. She developed award-winning choirs everywhere she taught, but even more importantly, she was a cherished mentor, truly encouraging her students to become the best versions of themselves.

Brenda’s passion for music gave her the opportunities to create many amazing experiences for her students. She traveled with her choirs, competing and performing across the U.S., as well as in Europe. She was the director of the East Baton Rouge Children’s Choir from 1997-2012 and the Broadmoor United Methodist Youth Choir, and she introduced the first show choir in the Baton Rouge school system, the Denims and Diamonds. The walls of Brenda’s choir room were covered with giant trophies and plaques for the excellence she brought out in her students, although the thing she valued most were her students themselves, many of whom remained in touch with her for years, and many of whom followed in her footsteps.

Brenda was a very devoted mother to her daughter Savannah, bringing her on every choir trip and never missing a single sports or school event in her life. She loved Savannah more than anything.

Most importantly, Brenda was a devout Christian, actively participating in Bible studies and church groups. She lived the way Jesus lived, loving, accepting, and mentoring people from all walks of life.

There will be a celebration of Brenda’s life beginning with a visitation from 9:30-11:00am at Broadmoor United Methodist Church on Mollylea Dr. in Baton Rouge on Saturday, January 21st, followed by the service, and Brenda will be laid to rest at Greenoaks Memorial Park on Florida Blvd in Baton Rouge. Online condolences may be left at www.greenoaksfunerals.com

Brenda loved color, and LSU, so black is not necessary. Please wear your favorite color or something to represent LSU.

Randall Kevin Ellis

Randall “Randy” Kevin Ellis, lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, LA, died unexpectedly at home on February 3, 2022. The family is deeply saddened over this tragic occurrence. Randy was born September 11, 1967 to Albert and Jean Ellis. He graduated from Broadmoor High School in 1985. As an avid outdoorsman and entrepreneur, Randy built a successful lawn service business with many long-standing clients. He loved fishing and boating and was in constant pursuit of the elusive large-mouthed bass. If Randy wasn’t working or fishing, he could readily be found traveling to car shows and races. Randy, always with a big grin on his face, was ready to help anyone needing assistance. He was a humble man and devoted son. Randy, along with his brother, David, spent the last several years caring for their elderly parents. Randy has had quite a difficult time coping with the deaths of his mother in June 2019 and his father in September 2021. Far too soon, he has been reunited with them both. Randy leaves behind his older brother and best friend, David Noel Ellis, his son, Blake Anthony Ellis, and numerous loving cousins and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date. Memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice. In the meantime, raise a glass to Randy’s finding peace.

Our Peaceful Warrior passed to the next realm peacefully in my arms 1:30 pm, September 16th. As you know, Smith’s joie de vivre was contagious, and some of his last words were, “I hope everyone just has a good time…I never understood why everyone was so uptight…I enjoyed life.” I had the privilege of talking to him and loving on him as he passed and at one point told him, “I can hear you telling me it was okay and to have fun,” is was the only time during his passing that his lip moved and our sweet friend, Patty Lopiccolo, who was also at his side and helped play nurse during his last days said, “I think there was even a half smile then.”

Smith was a proud graduate of Broadmoor High School’s class of ’85, where he excelled in sports. He was on the 4A Louisiana State Basketball team and earned a football scholarship to Texas A&M, where he was on several Southwest Conference Champion teams as a tight end. He was the oldest child of Ernestine Daily Hartley and Smith W. Hartley, Jr., who many may remember as long-time assistant plant manager of Texaco’s Convent refinery.

Smith’s interest in health, healthcare, philosophy and well-being culminated in us launching US Healthcare Journals in 2007. The Journals provide insight to the healthcare industry in local markets and include Healthcare Journal of Baton Rouge, Healthcare Journal of New Orleans and Healthcare Journal of Arkansas. He graduated from Texas A&M with a BS in Health and the University of Houston, Clear Lake with an MHA/MBA. Prior to launching the Journals, Smith’s career ranged from running group practices in Houston to overseeing healthcare of 2000+ inmates at New York City’s Rikers Island, which he found fascinating. After a back injury, Smith found yoga and became a certified vinyasa yoga instructor, teaching a surprisingly beautiful and peaceful practice for a 6’6” instructor who towered over the class.

We were married in 1989. Many say we shared a love story and mutual respect few have experienced. Smith was diagnosed in 2019 with glioblastoma while living on Kaua’i and decided then to spend the remainder of his time in Seattle, which was a city on his bucket list. Smith collected close friends from each phase of his life. The last two years of this wonderful man were enveloped in love as friends and many family members pilgrimaged to Seattle to pay respects, share a laugh and enjoy the moment.

Smith will have a full-body burial at sea in the San Juan Islands, off the coast of Washington, Wednesday, September 22, close to where he was born. Two boats filled with loved ones will accompany the body.

Aloha Smith, you will be missed dearly, but as he used to say, “life is funny this way.”
